Phone Mounts for Bicycles and Motorbikes

Date Posted:26 June 2019

Having a phone mount on your bike - whether it’s the foot or petrol powered variety - is as good as essential. Rather than having to pull over and take out your phone whenever you need to check your route, a phone mount means you can see exactly where you are, and where you need to go next, at a glance. There’s no need to come off the road or interrupt the fun.

Mounted phones can also be used to accurately record your ride, giving you details of your speed, distance and time on the road. If you’re a cyclist wanting to make sure you hit a certain speed to train for an event, they’re ideal. You don’t need to buy a separate bike computer - just mount your phone and it’ll do exactly the same job.

If you’ve never used a mount before, but want to start now, you’ll be a convert after one trip out with one. Phone mounts can help you find your way more easily so you can focus just on your bike and the road.

Which phone mount?

There are lots of different types of mounts out there, meaning it can be tricky to choose the right one. You’ll need to choose the right mount for your bike, your riding style and your phone.

Some mounts are universal and work with any phone, others are designed for a specific brand or model. Most are designed to protect your phone from the elements, but a few won’t, or will only stand up to the lightest of showers. This might not be a problem if you only do casual summer riding, but could be a serious issue if you commute on your bike and will sometimes need to brave the rain.

You should also think about whether the mount you choose will protect your phone if you have an accident, especially if you’re heading out with the latest iPhone. Some cases are designed to take a fall, others offer nothing in the way of protection.

Bicycle mounts

Bicycle mounts will usually fix to either your handlebars or the stem that connects the handlebars to the rest of the bike. Either position is a good choice, and both allow you a good view of your phone while you’re riding. The downside is that some riders find it intrusive to have a mount on their bars, especially on a drop bar bike.

If that’s you, you can mount your phone to the top tube. The disadvantage is that this makes your phone harder to see. It also usually means using a tube bag with a phone pocket, rather than a dedicated mount. These can work well, but aren’t as sturdy as some other options.
Motorbike mounts

Most motorcyclists choose a phone mount that goes on their handlebars. These allow you to see your phone easily and check your location or directions without taking your eyes off the road. The handlebars are the obvious place to put your phone, but not everyone has space on their handlebars for a mount. If you’re one of them, you’ll find there are some mounts designed to fix to your clutch or brake.
